With the recent Walking In The Sun, singer and cabaret artist Barb Jungr has intensified the gospel and blues power of her music, now more explicitly combining her fascination with chanson and European folk musics with her love of Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Reed and Carole King. Jungr first found her feet on the alternative cabaret circuit (with Julian Clary and Alexei Sayle among others), but her sweeping vocal skills, broad tastes and intelligence have made her a big international draw; this year she has sold out shows from Australia to New York, and she appeared alongside KT Tunstall, Odetta and Billy Bragg on the Bob Dylan tribute concert. In Jungr’s varied show, Dylan’s poetry intermingles with jazz standards, northern soul and continental Europe’s cabaret history. Here she’s accompanied by pianist-arranger Jenny Carr and on organ, harmonica, autoharp and melodica, Jessica Lauren.

Barb has reinvented “cabartet” and in the even broader sense of a diverse range of songs interpreted in this style. A song-stylist incorporating jazz and blues, her approach often includes radical re-woekings and brilliant arrangements of classic songwriters such as Dylan, Springsteen, Cohen, Rundgren, Simon, Eno, Daimond etc, as well as original material.

With rave international reviews and two prestigious New York awards (2008 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist and Best International Artist 2003 Backstage Award), Barb Jungr is renowned for her unique vocal style, interpretation of song and radical approach to arrangements. Her acclaimed releases on Linn Records and Naim Label, and “revelatory” live performances have brought her to audiences all around the world.

Barb celebrated 2011 touring the UK extensively with a new Bob Dylan collection, performing the show Girl Talk with Mari Wilson and Gwyneth Herbert, and collaborating with Kuljit Bhamra and Simon Wallace on Durga Rising. The CD The Man In The Long Black Coat – Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan was released in May 2011 by Linn Records to excellent reviews and she toured throughout the UK and to the USA in autumn 2011, performing for the first time in LA and Austin with return appearances in San Francisco and a 2 week run in New York.

“One of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere on this angst ridden planet today” (Village Voice, New York) and “one of the best nightclub singers in the world” (Time Out New York), Jungr is “a fearless iconoclast who dives into the deepest waters of popular song to wrest exotic treasure from the ocean floor” (The New York Times). Her earlier Dylan collection, Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand (Linn Records 2002), which the Wall Street Journal called “the most significant vocal album of the 21st century thus far,” is now regarded as a cult classic album.

Born and raised Rochdale and Stockport, Barb has worked with many of the finest musicians and composers in the UK (including Mark Anthony Turnage who wrote ‘About Water’ for her to sing at the re-opening of The South Bank with the London Symphonietta), has toured all over the world with the British Council in the 1990s (Malawi, Cameroon, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Cote D’Ivoire, Sudan), appeared in Australia (2006, 2007 and a sellout tour in 2010), toured across Norway and Holland and performs regularly in New York and across the United States (several seasons at The Cafe Carlyle and Metropolitan Room and Joe’s Pub, New York, Catalina’s in LA, Rrazz Room in San Francisco and for Austin Cabaret).

As a writer and lyricist, Barb’s credits include The Jungle Book (Birmingham Stage Company), The Fabulous Flutterbys (The Little Angel Theatre), Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast and Dick Whittington for The Newbury Corn Exchange, and Mabel Stark Tiger Tamer currently in development for Northampton Royal and Derngate.

Barb lives in London.

MUSICIAN Marvin Ayres held a recording session with a difference at Winchester Cathedral last Friday (February 24).

He spent several hours performing in the historic landmark, but not with the aim of recording his notes.

Instead, he wanted to capture the echoes and reverberations for a major new project.

The multi-instrumentalist is visiting a range of awe-inspiring and unusual venues across Britain for his latest work.

It has already included visiting Portsmouth’s Royal Navy base and playing inside a submarine.

Later this year he intends to merge all of the captured echoes and reverberations into a new musical work.

He is also planning several live performances, which is expected to include a date at Winchester Cathedral.

Marvin Ayres’ Sacred Spaces.

The next date and location for Marvin Ayres’ Sacred Spaces project will be on Friday February 24th, 2012 in Winchester Cathedral.

Marvin Ayres’s latest project is Sacred Spaces. The idea behind Sacred Spaces is to use incongruous places for composition and performance and reawaken the inherent and/or dormant spirit residing in these unlikely locations. “Pilgrims in search of sonic beauty”. These include anything from derelict industrial sites to historical places of interest, (incorporating National Trust and English Heritage) and re appropriating them for musical purposes.

Sacred Spaces is an ongoing and evolving project. The instruments will be randomly tuned to compliment the environments and microphones will be used to pick up and record the full ambience of the spaces once excited by the cellos, violins and violas. One element which will link all the locations will be the same series of notes which will be assembled to create one collective piece composed from the overtones, sustains and reverberations recorded in each environment.

The intention is to return at a later date to the Cathedral and to stage and exhibit a 3D surround sound installation of the compositions that were inspired by, and recorded there. To accompany these journeys the project will be documented with a film diary.

Other locations planned or underway for “Sacred Spaces” are: Bretton Chapel in Yorkshire Sculpture Park, H.M.S Alliance submarine, Fleet Air Arm museum including Concorde, Tate art gallery store, Royal Observatory, The Atomic testing site at Orford Ness, and others.

Marvin Ayres is a British modern-classical composer, cellist, violinist, pianist and producer. He has composed and recorded a diverse selection of minimalist albums, incorporating spatial soundscapes and psycho-acoustics and latterly 5.1 and True 3D Surround in the ‘Wall Of Waves’ Studio.

The idea behind ‘Sacred Spaces’ is to use incongruous places for composition and performance and reawaken the inherent and/or dormant spirit residing in these unlikely locations. “Pilgrims in search of sonic beauty”. These include anything from derelict industrial sites to historical places of interest, and re-appropriating them for musical purposes.

‘Sacred Spaces’ is an ongoing and evolving project with recordings in different environments.
One element which will link all the locations will be the same series of notes which will be assembled to create one collective piece composed from the overtones, sustains and reverberations recorded in each environment.

I will be returning to the locations at a later stage to exhibit 3D audio installations of the compositions that were inspired by and recorded there.

To accompany these journeys, the project will be documented with a film diary.

So far this project has been completely self funded and I’ve managed to secure locations such as Winchester Cathedral, Tate, HMS Alliance, Orford Ness, Bretton Chapel, Concorde at the Fleet Air Arm museum, the Big Pit, BBC Bush House. However, after investing over several thousand resources are now running out. Your donations will be used to pay locations fees, equipment hire, sound engineer, travel and accommodation costs in order to sustain the project at this stage.

In return for donations over £15 you will receive a signed copy of the final album including extensive liner notes about the project. This may even include 5.1 surround sound versions of the finished compositions.

In return for donations over £50, you will receive the above plus a special thank you printed in the liner notes.

Marvin Ayres made recordings inside the 1940s submarine.

A composer has used a World War II submarine at a Hampshire museum to help create a new piece of music.

Marvin Ayres recorded sounds, echoes and reverberations on board HMS Alliance, based at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, in Gosport.

The session was part of his Sacred Spaces project, making recordings in historical environments with different sonic characteristics.

Mr Ayres said: “It’s ethereal and beautiful – beyond my expectations.”

During his career as a composer, cellist and pianist, Mr Ayres has contributed to albums by bands including Culture Club, Simply Red, Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

‘Tight space’The Gosport recording saw the submarine wired with microphones to record Mr Ayres playing cellos, violins and violas.

Sound engineer Alex Sidell said: “It’s fantastic and particularly unique because of the tight space and all the metal.”

The team plans to record in other historical or derelict venues around the country, including Cornish tin mines and the former Orford Ness atomic weapons research site in Suffolk.

Mr Ayres said: “The idea is just to go into a space and to try to extract the spirituality and resonances inherent in the building.”

It is hoped a piece of music will be compiled from the instruments and the echoes recorded in each environment, with an album available by the end of next year.

HMS Alliance is being restored as a memorial to submariners who gave their lives in military service.

It is listed in the UK’s historic ship’s register, alongside the Cutty Sark, the Mary Rose, and HMS Victory.
